Latest update from Woodley Sider

Racked off the first brew from 27/8, so that’s 5.5 gallons of apple Sider completed fermentation and now transferred to another fermenting bin to settle ready for bottling in a week or so – hopefully in time for the Redshoot Beer Festival.

6 crates of apples are currently soaking in water to give them a clean ready for the next session of crushing & pressing this weekend.

5ltrs from the 2008 brew have had the tap removed from the bag-in-box and the opening covered with some muslin to let it breathe and hopefully develop into Woodley Sider Vinegar!

Preparation for Brew no. 3

Acquired more apples this weekend, 2.5 crates via CK, 0.5 crates from Laithwaites trees in Theale, and 2 crates off my own trees! (And there are still more to get off our trees, but need assistance getting up the tree at the weekend!).

Re-pressing!

4 gallons of re-pressing done, 3 of apple and mixed berries, and 1 gallon of pear. 1 of those gallons has had additional sugar added to bump up the alcohol level so that could prove interesting! The others are all around the 2-3% mark, so lighter in strength as expected.

Batch 2 of Woodley Sider.

14 gallons pressed, 6 gallons apple, 5 gallons pear & apple, 1 gallon pear, 1 gallon apple & blackberry, and 1 gallon apple, raspberry and blackberry. Some interesting combinations this time round. And kept some of the pulp for re-pressing for a lighter brew, if it works. Many thanks to Adam for his invaluable help.

The Crusher Stand!

Now being the proud owner of a crusher, and having used it once perched over a bucket it was obvious that a stand of some kind was going to be required. Below is a plan for that stand, drawn up using Google SketchUp and currently in the workshop for production.

Click on the image for a full size (un-cropped) version. If this works I shall consider patenting the design ;o)

The crusher will sit on the top, secured down so that minimal movement can take place and there is room underneath on the small platform for a 25ltr bucket to catch the crusher fruit.

Woodley Sider 2011

The first batch of the 2011 edition of Woodley Sider was pressed at the weekend, and the yeast added yesterday. Should take around 2 weeks to complete the fermentation process and then it’s a case of racking it off and leave for another week or two before bottling.

Pictures from the first batch can be seen in the photo gallery.

The %age is looking like it’ll be in the region of 5.7%.
